In South Africa, a ‘pavement internet’ is taking shape as popular political discourse meets mobile messaging and images, audio and video are shared. These new modes of political talk rely on a commodified and highly differentiated infrastructure for networking. This chapter explores youth politics on party fan pages, citizen journalism at a popular tabloid and the refusal of networked individualism by striking miners at Marikana. These cases show how distinctive digital materialities shape new forms of participation. By concentrating power at network switching points, and allocating differential writing rights and network-making powers these materialities also entrench discursive inequalities.
